I’ve recently taken to supporting Open Sourced Projects if i see myself utilizing them frequently because it feels like the right thing to do. These projects work, they are a great alternative as popular platforms are sometimes not intuitive despite all of their attempts to be ‘easy to use’. Many open source projects are free and are still in development but the utility they bring and problems they solve are worth occasional clunkiness that will eventually get fixed somewhere down the line or by another developer taking a look at the code.
The default donation amount is usually not a large amount asked and the support/donation process is almost always through an official/legitimate payment service that we use for other websites. A little bit here and there can give more value to a wider community and just bring more options available besides the big platforms.
I’m not saying ‘Support every project that’s open sourced!’ but I am stating that I am taking a more active role in supporting open sourced platforms that I’ve used and have accomplished what I set out to do originally. The project solved a problem/issue I had, I got what I wanted, I liked using it, so I support them for their service.
It’s important to help grow alternative and community projects on the internet as they give us more freedom from big platforms and their ‘Walled-Gardens’.
If there is value being given then doesn’t it make sense to support it so that project can continue to exist and the utility provided gives value to oneself and others?
Try it out and see how that project grows.
