Ownership of Creation

Usually looking up something related to ‘Ownership’ and ‘Creation’ brings up The Bible. This post is more related to the Creator(Writer, Artist, Musician, Designer, ETC) and being able to claim Ownership and Authority over their work.

Many are scared of AI scanners shamelessly scanning/copying their creation without payment or reference to the originator but still continue to publish on a platform instead of their own space.

The example I use is: When I create something in my Personal Space, like my house, I have a right and claim to the creation as the owner. It’s in my house, I created it, and the only way others can see it is if I give them permission to enter my house and display my creation. If I were to create in a public space, say a park, than anybody within that space can see me working on something and are free to take inspiration or even copy the creation entirely without giving due credit because they say it in a public space. I have no authority in that space and I certainly cannot stop others from taking my creation and running with it because it was set in a public space.

to reiterate: The house is a personal website, such as this one, and the park is any platform like Medium, Facebook(Meta), Twitter(X), ETC. Logging onto any of these platforms gives me a full view of what other people are ‘creating’ without, usually, any restrictions on what I can do with what is on my feed. It’s all in ‘public’ and it’s all accessible.

But since I am creating in my personal space first, I can add small but important details that can act as a sort of barrier against scanners, copiers, and ‘inspired’ individuals, Metadata.

Metadata, ID3 tags, an RSS feed, digital ‘prints’ or watermarks are all important tools that imprint on the creation who owns what, why it was created, the origin point of the creation, and possibly much, much more.

It’s becoming more important than ever to recognize the features and tools a creator has at their disposal to protect themselves, their creations, and sometimes their process. But the only way these features and tools are accessible, to my current knowledge, is to create in a personal space FIRST before sharing the creation on other platforms. Because once a creation is out in the wild, there is no way to return it back to the storehouse.
