Understanding ‘who’ exactly a space is for will help with making progress in any regard. Blockchains, Decentralized Applications, Generative AIs tools, Platforms on Web2. There is a wide variety that say ‘anyone can use them’ but there is a specific group that the space is (currently) directed towards.
For example, Facebook was originally made for college students to have a social space online then families could be allowed to join and eventually businesses were allowed. Spaces for a specific group generally don’t ‘exclude’ others from participating but understanding the purpose and narrative of the space and its community will greatly help.
Earlier last year I was suggested to join Notd. A writing platform that provides creators ownership of their creations and offers ‘subscription’ services for those creations. What I created on Notd had no ‘hook’ to it. It wasn’t interesting enough nor worth a subscription. I posted there infrequently and decided to figure out ‘who’ Notd was for. After perusing the recent and popular ‘streams’ created I quickly understood who Notd was made for: Story writers, stream of thought discussion/topics, and ‘nuanced’ community sharing. Things that were constantly being updated, added to, and growing.
Could I still participate? Sure. But I would have to change my writing style and message on that platform to make it worthy of a subscription. Did I close my account? No. Because like Facebook, the space might change and suddenly I am one of the individuals the space is for.
What is there to take away from this? With every platform, space, tool, and utility saying “It’s for you!” just take a step back and take a deep look at the space, the community, and the actual purpose of everything. It might be worth pursuing or it might not. Taking the time to look around and observe the participants will give a clear understanding of what that space was really made for.
Some blockchains are specific and niche while others are more broad. Some Generative AIs can be nitty-gritty with details or be wide and varied with its utility. It’s about finding something that values the time and energy put in and gives equal output. And that is what takes time.
Instead of spending more of my time trying to fit in with ‘Notd’ I will be exploring other avenues to spread my message. It was an interesting platform to be apart of but it doesn’t suit my needs. Ever onwards!
