What Problems does Decentralization solve?

To participate with decentralization means figuring out a tangled mess of processes and connection points that mainstream platforms have already solved and made easy for a user to get past and start posting.

Is it worth it? Well it depends on how valuable one finds decentralization to be. Decentralization platforms are generally stored in ‘nodes’ akin to a server by spread across participants. If you participate with decentralization then chances are you become something of a node that supports the state of that decentralization.

Instead of a username and password a participant is assigned randomly generated ‘keys’ and a handle (often can be chosen) to safeguard that authenticates their access, control of what is being created, and how their account interacts with other creations.

Decentralization has no ‘censorship’ or ‘administrator’ to limit a creator but it also has no ‘backups’ incase something gets lost. There is no ‘account reset’ and if that access is lost or misplaced than the entire account is compromised or locked potentially forever.

I mean it all sounds very serious and daunting. What’s the uptake? Freedom to create whatever is wanted without worrying about a platform suddenly nixing a creation or even the users account and all its history to a 404 page with no mention of why or even a possibility of account restoration if an error occurred. On a Decentralized Platform what is created there generally stays there as long as there is an active node available to access.

That’s not to say decentralization is for everyone. Decentralization definitely has an entry barrier and because the nature of decentralization is to get off of mainstream platforms that means that search engines or index scanners cannot ‘find’ what is created on that decentralized platform (Unless a frontend offers to show results). So where does that leave a creator who wants to create and even have a chance to be seen in the wild?

Well, that is a powerful (re)purpose of decentralized creation. Just take what was created, edit it a bit so it is not 1-1 or similar, and post it on a centralized platform with a link to the origin source.

Now there is a version that IS searchable/indexable and without a chance of ‘accidentally’ being removed/deleted because the original is still around on that decentralized space.

Can the same be done with a domain? Of course! That’s how creators did it then and it still works now but a domain, while giving much freedom and originality depending on the host, CMS, and other nuances, is still on a centralized space. Videos, Audio, and blog posts can be created on a domain (such as this one) but posting on a domain by itself can seem like publishing into a void with the little reception blogs normally get, how search engines are displaying platform or article sites instead of blogs related to a search topic, and other conniving methods search engines are using to remove or squash blogs from popping up in their results. (Marginalia for blog topic searches!)

Value is an aspect frequent on decentralized platforms because an individual on a decentralized platform is a ‘participant’, they usually have a say on how the platform could be run, which gives them a ‘value’ starting from day 1. Of course on day 1 that value is miniscule but that value number can be increased with further participation.

Gaining ‘value’ shouldn’t be THE purpose of creating or participating with decentralized platforms but it is A reason to continue creating quality finished creations as a creator can truly start their journey with monetary aspects present without having to jump through hoops and adhere to constantly changing guidelines to earn a fraction of what the platform receives from ads, views, and other means.

So what purpose does Decentralization solve? It’s not an easy answer as it depends on the creator and their ultimate goal or venture to progress towards. Do they want to have a ‘solid’ copy that wont be deleted? Do they want to create on a platform that offers value from day 1 and spread it to other platforms? Does the creator not want to partake in mainstream platforms? Does the creator not want to figure out domains, indexing, and SEO?

The question is akin to a quote from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, “once you do know what the question actually is, you’ll know what the answer means.” (I think). There are many answers to a question but only if it fits the creator will the purpose shine.

So where does one find decentralized platforms that are trusted, relevant, and have a purpose for a creator?

I mean, this is up in the air. I participate with the Hive Blockchain frequently because of how the community split off from the Tron Blockchain due to shady practices committed to/with the asset. This was back in 2021-ish and while the value of the coin/token has fallen considerably I think the options Hive offers with its many dApps make it almost an ‘all-in-one’ for a decentralized social platform.

There are always alternatives though and this is where doing research on these areas is critical in having a better understanding of why anyone would want to participate. It’s not just about finding an ‘the everything’ platform but atleast a platform that excels at the one aspect and growing it from there.

I don’t have much experience with these decentralized platforms but 2026 seems to be starting off as a resurgence of the decentralized social space.

Here are some links(Not affiliated!) that may help find a decentralized space:

Obvious CYA/Disclaimer: Of course I am no economic advisor and have no ‘in’ with any of these links, sites, or spaces. Do your own research and due diligence to create and recognize a better understanding of why this decentralized option is valid for oneself and a creator.

That’s the blog post pretty much. I was supposed to work on other things but due to services faltering or things being awry I was left free and had time to create this. Will it be seen by creators in 2026? I hope so! Will it make an impact? I would like it to be.

I have a hard time creating on social platforms because the platform is akin to the casino, they always get their share, they always have a say, and they almost always win. It’s cool for a bit but once the mirage fades the reality sinks in.
